Ewing Young Mitchell, 77, a stage and screen actor probably best known for his roles in the “Sky King” and “The Adventures of Champion” Western television series. In both series Mitchell played sheriffs; in “Sky King,” Sheriff Hargrove, and in “Champion,” based on Gene Autry’s horse, Sheriff Powers. “Sky King” originated on radio in 1946 and went on to air on ABC-TV in 1953-54. “Champion” ran from September, 1955, to February, 1956, on CBS. Mitchell also became known as one of California’s Silver Riders, expert equestrians who appeared in parades throughout the Southwest. A baritone in Broadway musicals of the 1930s, Mitchell devoted his later years to managing several ranches he owned in Southern California. In La Jolla on Sept. 2 after a stroke.
