The World : British Mail Strike Settled

Britain’s striking postal workers reached an agreement to settle their 12-day-old walkout, which paralyzed Britain’s domestic and international mail deliveries. Alan Tuffin, leader of the postal workers, said all employees will be back to work by Thursday. The Royal Mail said that normal deliveries should be resumed by Friday. The issue that sparked the strike--the payment of bonuses to new postal workers in some regions--has not been resolved, but both sides said they are willing to continue negotiations. Some 150 million letters and parcels have piled up since the strike began Aug. 31, and officials said it will take about two weeks to clear the backlog.
