CAMPAIGN ’88 : Comes Down to a Joke

How, you might ask, could the vice president have forgotten the date of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor?
“That’s a good question,” Bush said when a student called out, “When was Pearl Harbor?” while he was taking part in a question-and-answer session at the Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord, Calif., on Thursday.
“Has anyone here ever made a mistake?” Bush asked the students, referring to the gaffe last week when he said Sept. 7--rather than Dec. 7--was the anniversary of the attack.
“You get a little tired from time to time,” he said, and jokingly added, “I’m glad to be here in Connecticut.”
