Prep Roundup : Marina’s Balancing Act Wins

A balanced attack led Marina High School to a 15-6 victory over Cabrillo Thursday in the first round of the Millikan water polo tournament at Long Beach Wilson.
Jason Cox scored four goals as Marina built a 12-3 halftime lead. Jeff Kagy and Ken Schwartz each scored three goals for Marina.
In the La Serna tournament:
Capistrano Valley 7, La Serna 6--Aaron Anderson and Trevor Cox each scored two goals, as Capistrano Valley (3-0) advanced to the tournament final. The Cougars will play Los Altos Saturday at 8:50 a.m.
In nonleague water polo:
Tustin 16, Edison 7--Peter Herman scored six goals to lead host Tustin (1-0).
In boys’ nonleague cross-country:
San Clemente 18, Irvine 42--Mike Ferrell led San Clemente with a first-place finish in 15:39 at home.
Savanna 29, Cypress 35, Kennedy 50--Sophomore Ray Estrada won the 3.2-mile race in 16:53 to lead Savanna at home.
In girls’ nonleague cross-country:
San Clemente 25, Irvine 30--Terri Smythers finished the three-mile course in 19:05 to lead San Clemente at home.
Cypress 15, Savanna 50, Kennedy 50--Freshman Joanne Cox and Staci Carrington tied for first (22:00 for 3.2-miles) to lead Cypress at Savanna.
El Toro 19, Dana Hills 43--Shannon Liddy finished first (20:08) to lead El Toro (1-0) at O’Neil Park.
In girls’ nonleague tennis:
Corona del mar 17, Fountain Valley 1--Courtney Strauss and Michele McFarland swept their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Corona del Mar at Fountain Valley.
Dana Hills 12, Laguna Hills 6--The Dolphins (4-0) were led by the doubles team of Julie Ammon and Lisa Brzezinski, who swept their sets at Nellie Gail Tennis Club.
Estancia 9, Edison 9 (Estancia wins on games, 91-82)--Christine De Carlo and Dina Birch each won two of three singles matches to lead Estancia (4-1) at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.
Foothill 11, University 7--Trina Eggers won, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Foothill at University.
Fullerton 13, Connelly 5--Lorraine Lau won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, to lead host Fullerton (3-0).
Tustin 15, Santa Ana Valley 3--Malyssa Devitt won her singles sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Tustin (1-2) at Santa Ana Valley.
In girls’ nonleague volleyball:
El Toro 3, L.B. Wilson 0--Carrie Appleman had 16 kills as the host Chargers (2-0) swept, 15-10, 15-9, 15-9.
Esperanza 3, Sunny Hills 2--Heidi Andersen had 39 assists to lead the Aztecs at home, 15-5, 3-15, 6-15, 15-6, 15-10.
Valencia 3, Katella 1--Julie Jones had 34 assists as Valencia won, 15-12, 15-13, 14-16, 15-6, at Katella.
Villa Park 3, Garden Grove 0--Anne Salzman had 17 kills as Villa Park (3-0) won, 15-2, 15-12, 15-9, at Garden Grove.
