Western High School broke open a scoreless tie early in the second half Friday night en route to a 12-0 victory over Cypress in Handel Stadium.
The Pioneers (1-1) scored with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter when Gary Fernandez went off right guard on a one-yard touchdown run to cap a 10-play, 59-yard drive. The point after failed and Western led, 6-0.
Western added some insurance with a fourth-quarter touchdown. The Pioneers were attempting to kick a field goal when Niles Roberson grabbed an errant snap from center and lobbed a desperation pass to Erik Dowell for the final score.
Western’s defense harassed the Centurions all night, piling up 8 sacks for 53 yards in losses. Western allowed Cypress just 42 yards of total offense in the second half.
