Career Scoring Record Set by White Does Not Last Long

Approximately 6,000 spectators at Birmingham High were informed via the public-address system Saturday night that Crespi running back Russell White had broken the Southern Section career touchdown mark on the second of three touchdowns he scored in Crespi’s 24-20 win over San Fernando.
Believing that they had witnessed a record-setting performance, the crowd gave White a huge ovation. But the record cited is not on the Southern Section books.
Although the section keeps track of records for career rushing touchdowns and career receptions for touchdowns, no combined touchdown records are kept.
It was incorrectly announced that White had broken the Southern Section record of 73 touchdowns set by Mickey Cureton of Centennial High in Compton (1964-66). Cureton scored 73 rushing touchdowns. White has 68 rushing touchdowns, 5 shy of the record. White has caught 7 scoring passes, which gives him a total of 75.
White is closing fast on several marks, however. The senior All-American tailback has scored 452 points, 22 behind Cureton’s Southern Section career record of 474. In career rushing yardage, White has 4,957 yards, 440 shy of the state and Southern Section record set by Ray Pallares (5,397 yards) of Valencia High in Placentia. White needs 4 touchdowns and 25 points to break the state scoring record set by Tyreese Knox of Jefferson High in Daly City.
