The eldest son of the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser goes on trial in absentia today in Cairo for attacks against U.S. and Israeli diplomats in Egypt and faces the death penalty if convicted. Khaled Nasser, 38, and 10 others were indicted on charges of forming an underground group to oppose the U.S.-mediated Camp David peace accords of 1978 between Egypt and Israel. The group, called “Egypt’s Revolution,” claimed responsibility for attacks in Cairo against Israelis and Americans from June, 1984, to May, 1987. Two Israeli diplomats were killed and two U.S. diplomats wounded. Nasser is reportedly in hiding in Yugoslavia.
