For and Against Dornan’s Record

Your editorial concerning me (Oct. 27) is yet another gross distortion of my congressional service. You state, “Dornan is seldom seen in his district.” This is flat-out untrue. We own a home in the district, my Sallie lives there year-round, and so I am home nearly every weekend.
My up-front style has not blocked me from working with the liberal majority in the House to pass more than 50 Dornan amendments in 10 years. One of my four attached to the recently passed anti-drug bill establishes a national program for the disposal and cleanup of hazardous chemicals associated with illegal drug labs.
I’ve also spearheaded the effort to have the Department of Transportation release $28.4 million in highway funds to California, persuaded Pentagon officials to give more work to the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and secured substantial federal help for Buena-Clinton, the Fiesta Marketplace, Orange County’s first Foreign Trade Zone, its new Small Business Center, the Santa Ana Flood Control Project and the Anaheim Transportation project.
The bottom line is that The Times opposes my reelection because I am an unapologetic conservative. I will therefore wear as a badge of honor The Times’ endorsement of an unknown man from Oakland who wears a chicken suit and carries around a bird.
