Armistice Day
Sixty years ago on the 10th anniversary of Armistice Day, traffic was halted all across town at 11 a.m. so that buglers from the Boy Scouts could go to the middle of major intersections, blow taps to the east, then to the west.
My big brother had the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Normandie and was adjudged the best bugler for which he was awarded a silver (painted) bugle.
He played cornet in the ROTC band at Hollywood High. Being not yet 14 and stubby of limb, John Dibert fell behind while on outside pivot when the band marched at half-time during football games. His heroic effort to get back in step earned bigger cheers than the quarterback got.
