Negotiations between the three major networks and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists continued Monday in efforts to work out a new contract to succeed one that expires at midnight tonight. Each side has agreed not to publicly discuss the status of the talks, although one source says the current AFTRA contract may be extended depending on how the negotiations are going. The talks began on Oct. 3. The union represents on-air news and sports staffers and entertainers at the networks and network-owned stations. A majority of AFTRA members have give their officials authority to call a strike if necessary. The union, which says it has 70,000 members, estimates that between 3,000 and 4,000 of them work at the networks.
