College Roundup : Warde Scores 100th Goal; UCI Wins

UC Irvine’s Tom Warde scored his 100th goal this season, the third highest total in Anteater water polo history, as Irvine closed out its Big West Conference season with a 12-8 victory over UC Santa Barbara at Heritage Park in Irvine Saturday.

Warde, a junior who attended Marina High School, had 6 goals in the match to place him behind Gary Figueroa (110) and Mike Evans (102) in the single-season scoring records at Irvine.

The Anteaters end the regular season at 17-13 overall and 8-2 in the Big West Conference and they keep their string of consecutive winning seasons alive at 24, every year since the university opened in 1965.

Pairings for the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Championship next weekend at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach will be announced today.

In NAIA women’s cross-country:

Sherri Hall of Southern California College placed 42nd, at the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Cross-Country Championships in Wisconsin. She ran the 5K-course in 18 minutes, 49 seconds.

In Pacific 10 wrestling:

Arizona State University 32, Cal State Fullerton 3--Senior David Jones was the lone Cal State Fullerton victor in a Pac-10 Conference dual meet at Arizona State Saturday. Jones, a heavyweight, defeated Mike Anderson, 12-6. Fullerton (0-1) next takes on No. 1 Oklahoma State, Nov. 27 at Titan Gym.

In Big West men’s swimming:

UC Irvine 160, Cal State Long Beach 99--Junior Brian Judd won both the 500 (4 minutes, 48 seconds) and 1,000 (9:51:07) freestyle races to pace Irvine over Long Beach in a Big West Conference meet at Belmont Plaza. Matt Curry and senior Matt Wright placed 1-2 in the 100 freestyle to give Irvine (1-0) a 35-point cushion.

In women’s swimming:

Cal State Long Beach 149, UC Irvine 129--Irvine’s Sumie Utsonomiya won the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events and Lara Bigley won the 100 and 200 backstroke events in the Anteaters Big West Conference loss to Long Beach. At the same meet, Irvine tied Pepperdine University, 152-152, in nonconference competition.

In Big West women’s volleyball

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--Outside hitter Ali Wood had 15 kills for Irvine in a 15-3, 15-8, 15-12 Big West Conference loss to Santa Barbara. Irvine ends the regular season at 19-11 overall, 8-10 in the Big West. Santa Barbara is 17-15 and 9-9. The Anteaters are hoping for a bid to the NCAA playoffs.
