Marcos, Too Ill for N.Y. Arraignment, Asks OK to Appear at Trial in Manila

MANILA — Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, who was excused from traveling to New York to face criminal charges because of ill health, wants to fly 4,800 miles from his Honolulu home to Manila next month for a court hearing, officials said today.
Officials said Marcos, who faces federal racketeering charges in the United States, is seeking permission to act as his own lawyer when his former highways minister, Baltazar Aquino, testifies in Manila Dec. 5-9 about kickbacks he is alleged to have received on Marcos’ behalf.
A previous petition by the deposed ruler to return home was rejected by the Philippine court when the Aquino government argued Marcos would pose a security threat if allowed back in his homeland.
