Britain Plans Random AIDS Tests

From Reuters

The British government announced plans today to start random testing for AIDS.

Health Secretary Kenneth Clarke told a news conference that patients who have voluntarily given blood for reasons unrelated to tests for the AIDS virus, known as HIV, will be anonymously tested for the killer disease. “The balance of scientific opinion strongly favors such testing as the best way to obtain information about the overall prevalence of HIV infection by age and sex in the various parts of the country, and the rate at which it is spreading in the population at large,” he said. The tests will start in the middle of next year.
