The troubled relations between Eastern Air Lines and its unions spilled onto the pavement as an estimated 300 to 400 members of the International Assn. of Machinists staged a wildcat walkout. The protest at Eastern’s headquarters in Miami and at Miami International Airport followed the breakdown last week of 16 months of negotiations between Eastern, a unit of Houston-based Texas Air Corp., and the union, increasing the possibility of a strike early next month. According to union sources, the walkout was precipitated by company threats to dismiss cleaning and ramp personnel who refused to work overtime.
