Capital Cherry Trees in Shape for Festival

WASHINGTON — The famed cherry trees here will bloom early this year and should continue their colorful vibrancy well into next month’s National Cherry Blossom Festival, a National Park Service official said Wednesday.
“The buds are in very good shape, said William Anderson, regional scientist for the park service. “They did not suffer from last year’s drought.”
The blossoming of the cherry trees signals the unofficial start of spring in the nation’s capital and most frequently occurs on April 5, Anderson said. He would not predict exactly when this year’s blossoming will begin.
The weeklong festival, from April 3-9, includes the annual Cherry Blossom Parade, on April 8.
