A man who followed an employee into the Union Check Cashing Co. on Thursday morning and threatened her with a gun stole $18,500 and a handgun from the safe.
Marie Acosta, 40, had just entered the business, in the 5000 block of El Cajon Boulevard, and was going to deactivate the alarm when the bandit crept up behind her and forced her to open the safe.
Police are looking for the man, who fled the scene.
