Kin of Stockton Killer Denies Explosive Charges

MODESTO, Calif. — The half-brother of the man who went on a shooting rampage in a Stockton schoolyard last month has pleaded innocent in Stanislaus County Municipal Court to explosives charges, authorities said Thursday.
Bail remained at $500,000 for Albert Edward Gulart Jr., 20, of Modesto, who faces a felony count of possessing a destructive device in a public place and misdemeanor counts of possessing illegal fireworks and dangerous fireworks.
Modesto police who raided Gulart’s home seized an Ingram Mac-10 9-millimeter semiautomatic pistol, an M-1 carbine, ammunition for both weapons, 2 1/2-inch artillery shells, blasting caps and shotgun shells. They had received a tip from police in nearby Stockton that Gulart had told investigators that he and his half-brother, Patrick Purdy, once discussed the possibility of shooting a Modesto policeman.
Purdy was the gunman who used an assault rifle on Jan. 17 to kill five children and wound 30 before taking his own life.
