BEIRUT — A car bomb exploded near the American University Hospital in Muslim West Beirut today, killing two women and wounding 21, police said.
Druze warlord Walid Jumblatt, a staunch ally of the Syrians who police West Beirut, blamed the Christian Cabinet of Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun for the blast. The explosive-laden yellow Fiat blew up in front of a fruit and vegetable stall at an intersection off a main commercial thoroughfare. Jumblatt charged at a news conference that the bomb was part of a campaign by the Christian Cabinet to choke private militias in Lebanon.
