A Bernalillo County grand jury in Albuquerque, N.M., returned a 66-count indictment against John Koenig, former University of New Mexico athletic director, and two men who worked for him as associate athletic directors.
Koenig was named in 47 counts; Mike Dill, a former associate athletic director, was named in 11 counts, and Terry Hearne, a former associate athletic director for finance, was named in eight counts.
Hearne has since been moved to the school’s central accounting office.
Assistant District Attorney Kathy Carter said the indictment primarily consisted of charges relating to false public vouchers, fraud, criminal solicitation and conspiracy.
Koenig, now living in Cape Girardeau, Mo., was forced to resign as athletic director last July 22, amid allegations that he had double-billed the school for travel and business expenses.
Koenig, a former assistant athletic director at the University of Illinois, was appointed athletic director at New Mexico in the spring of 1987.
