Cheri Schreck pitched a three-hitter to lead Chapman College to a 1-0 victory over Cal Lutheran in the first round of the Cal State Bakersfield tournament Friday at Greenacres Park in Bakersfield.
Schreck (7-4) struck out 12 for the Panthers (13-8). Sandra Olivas’ third-inning sacrifice fly scored Kirsten Lewis with the game’s only run.
Chapman plays Mankato State of Minnesota today in the second round.
In nonconference softball:
Southern California College 1-8, University of San Diego 2-0--In the second game, Susie Hopkins (3-5) pitched a four-hitter, striking out four, for Southern California College (8-12) at San Diego. The Vanguards scored all eight runs in the fifth inning on eight singles and a walk. Joyce LaPoint had three hits for Southern California College.
In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.:
San Diego State 3, UC Irvine 1--Mike Schlegel had 22 kills and Ed Rapp 46 assists as the Aztecs won, 14-16, 15-6, 15-6, 15-5, at Irvine. Kevin Norman had 22 kills for the Anteaters (5-20, 0-15).
