City officials will begin negotiating with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District to purchase the former Madison Elementary School property as a site for a city park, child-care facilities and low-income housing.
On Tuesday, the City Council authorized the city manager to begin negotiating to buy the 4.4 acres at Santa Monica Boulevard and 10th Street, currently the site of a continuation high school and children’s museum.
City officials said they hope to develop a 2.25-acre park, a 7,500-square-foot child-care center and 75 units of housing for low- and moderate-income families. Madison Elementary was closed in 1985.
