About 2,000 people, representing a hodgepodge of causes ranging from Korean reunification to gay rights, marched from the Capitol to the White House to protest Bush Administration policies. Organizers of the “Campaign for a People’s Fightback,” sponsored by more than 500 organizations, had predicted a greater turnout but a steady rain muddied their tent city on the Capitol grounds. Part of the group was protesting U.S. policy in Central America, while others were promoting more federal assistance to the homeless, restoration of student grants and loans, more AIDS research, cutbacks in weapons spending and other issues.
