Two Orange County Youth Soccer Teams Advance in Cup Play

Two Orange County teams advanced to the California Youth Soccer Assn. Western Regional with victories Saturday in National Cup play of the South Championships at Cal Poly Pomona.
Two other county teams were defeated in the quest to participate in the 78-team regional in June at Pleasanton.
Brian Mallin scored the winning goal as the North Huntington Beach Breakers beat the Whittier Aquilitas, 2-1, in the boys’ under-16 division.
Jill Florey scored early in second half to lead the Mission Viejo Wildfire to a 2-1 victory over the San Dieguito Surf in girls’ under-16.
Julie Foudy, of Mission Viejo High School, scored a hat trick to help the Walnut Nightmares defeat her hometown Mission Viejo Goaldiggers, 5-0, in the girls’ under-19 division.
And the North Huntington Beach Untouchables lost, 2-1, to the La Jolla Nomads in boys’ under-19.
In Redondo Beach Tournament boys’ volleyball:
Corona del Mar 2, Loyola 0--Jason Perkins was named tournament MVP as Corona del Mar (10-2) won the tournament championship with a 15-8, 15-12 victory.
In all, 11 county teams participated in the three divisions and six were victorious. Only teams in National Cup play advance to the regional.
