NATION : Iran-Contra Figure Richard Secord Charged With 9 New Felony Counts

WASHINGTON — Arms dealer Richard V. Secord was charged with nine new felony counts of lying during the 1987 congressional Iran-Contra hearings in an indictment unsealed today in federal court.
Secord, a retired Air Force major general, is accused of giving false testimony to the House and Senate Iran-Contra committees that investigated the U.S.-Iran arms deals and the diversion of profits from them to the Nicaraguan rebels.
Secord, already charged with participating in the Iran-Contra conspiracy, was the lead witness in the televised hearings conducted in the spring and summer of 1987 by the House and Senate committees. He testified without immunity from prosecution before the congressional panels.
The latest indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on April 7 but was kept under seal until the end of the trial of former White House aide Oliver North, who was convicted last week of three felony counts in the Iran-Contra affair.
