UCSD Needs Two Victories Today in Softball

UC San Diego must defeat Calvin College (Mich.) twice today at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals in Grand Rapids, Mich., to advance to the national championships.
Top-seeded UCSD (35-8), ranked No. 2 in the nation, was defeated by Calvin College, 2-1, Friday in the double-elimination tournament.
North Central College (Ill.) (27-7) was eliminated after losing to both Calvin College (27-5) and UCSD (by a score of 9-0). Michelle Mundee went two for three and scored two runs and Dianna Moreno (13-3) was the winner against North Central.
BASEBALL
U.S. International split a doubleheader with host Southern Utah, losing, 1-0, and winning, 10-8. In the second game, Scott Coutts hit a grand slam in the third for USIU. Coutts went three for five with six RBIs in the game, and Kevin Tahan went three for four with one RBI and three runs scored for USIU (24-33).
TRACK AND FIELD
Point Loma Nazarene College men and women are both in second after the first day of the NAIA District III championships in Point Loma. Azusa Pacific leads the men, 77-52, and the women, 56-48, in the eight-team fields.
The Crusaders’ Connie Navarro won the javelin with a throw of 135-feet-10, was second in the 100 meters at 12.63 and is leading the heptathlon with 2,742 points.
TENNIS
Christine Behrens and Nancy Calhoon of UC San Diego advanced to today’s doubles championship match at the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division III championships at Claremont-Mudd College.
UCSD won the team championship Wednesday.
Behrens and Calhoon, seeded second, defeated Deanne Sand and Mary Sutherland of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals.
In singles, Behrens was defeated in the quarterfinals, and Calhoon was beaten in the semifinals by No. 1 Caroline Bodart of Menlo, 6-0, 6-1.
