Hearing to Be Held on Firing of Ross

The Los Angeles Civil Service Commission on Wednesday agreed to hold a hearing on the firing of veteran Sheriff’s Department narcotics Det. Rickey Ross. Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block fired Ross on April 27, citing a number of allegations, including alcohol and drug abuse.
Ross, 40, had been accused in February of killing three South-Central Los Angeles prostitutes, but charges were dropped last week when prosecutors said that the Los Angeles Police Department’s ballistics tests were inconclusive.
None of the accusations by Block are connected to last February’s murder allegation, but are tied to an incident in which Ross was discovered in an undercover sheriff’s car with an admitted prostitute. Block alleged that Ross and the prostitute had been using drugs.
On May 17, Ross’ attorney, Jay Jaffe, wrote the commission that Ross denies all of Block’s allegations and wants a hearing to appeal his firing.
Neither Ross nor Jaffe appeared at the commission hearing.
