Spring Sports Playoffs : Versatile Lewis Leads Saugus to Softball Win

Senior left-hander Cathy Lewis struck out 15 and singled home the winning run in the 14th inning Thursday as the Saugus High softball team advanced to the Southern Section 3-A Division semifinals for the first time in school history with a 1-0 win over host Irvine.
Saugus (20-7), which was eliminated in the second round in each of the past two seasons, will play Covina on Tuesday at a site to be determined.
Lewis yielded just five hits and pitched out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning to improve her record to 20-7.
In the 14th, Brandy Rico singled with one out and advanced to second on an error. With two out, Lewis hit a chopper up the middle that deflected off the pitcher and to the shortstop, who threw late to first as Rico scored.
Notre Dame 2, St. Joseph 1--The Knights scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning and pitcher Becca Berline scattered three hits at St. Joseph to lead Notre Dame into the 2-A Division semifinals for the first time in school history.
The Knights will play Santa Fe on Tuesday at a site to be determined.
In the Notre Dame fifth, Alison Parker worked a leadoff walk and Vivian Carballo singled. After a sacrifice and an out, Gino Pinto laid down a bunt that was fielded by the catcher. The throw to first was dropped as two runners scored.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Harvard 13, Keppel 5--The Saracens advanced to their third consecutive Southern Section championship match by defeating Keppel in the 2-A semifinal at Keppel.
Harvard, which posted 1-A Division titles in each of the past two years, will play Righetti, a 10-8 winner over Cate, for the 2-A championship.
COLLEGE TRACK
Cal Lutheran stands 11th after the first day of the three-day NAIA outdoor track and field championships at Azusa Pacific.
Cal Lutheran sophomore Darren Bernard finished second in his 400-meter heat in 48.46 seconds to advance to today’s semifinal. Cal Lutheran finished eighth in the 400-meter relay heat with a time of 42.54.
In women’s competition, junior Amy Rico finished fourth in a 400-meter meters in 61.20. Teammate Susan Bluhm finished fifth with a time of 1:02.11.
COLLEGE GOLF
Cal State Northridge is currently third after 54 holes in the NCAA Division II championships at Lake View Country Club in Erie, Pa.
Scott Humphreys shot an 11-over-par 227 to tie for eighth for the Matadors. Teammate Roger Metz shot a 230 and is tied for 15th. Tim Hogarth (232) is tied for 26th.
