The Senate Appropriations Committee pushed the world’s largest atom smasher one giant step closer to reality by approving $225 million to begin construction of the project in Texas. The voice vote acceptance of the fiscal 1990 funding for the superconducting super collider--$25 million more than approved previously by the full House--was part of an $18.5-billion spending package for energy and water development programs.
