Afghan government forces repulsed an assault by Muslim guerrillas west of Kabul and killed 180 of them, the government said. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Nabi Amani said the guerrillas, commanded by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, also suffered many wounded when they were forced to withdraw after attacking government soldiers at Maidan, capital of Wardak province. Hekmatyar is a leading member of the interim government created to take over Afghanistan if the U.S.-backed rebels topple the Kabul regime.
