THE SIDELINES : Los Alamitos Cyclist Sets Record

REDMOND, Wash. — Nineteen-year-old Janie Eickhoff of Los Alamitos, a double world champion as a junior rider, won her first national title as a senior rider, setting an American track record along the way.
The victory Tuesday gives her a chance to again represent her country at the World Cycling Championships.
Eickhoff won the women’s kilometer time trial by almost two seconds over her nearest competitor, Kendra Kneeland of Portland, Ore., covering the 2 1/2 laps around the 400-meter Marymoor Velodrome track in 1 minute, 13.81 seconds, at the U.S. Track Cycling Nationals.
Erin Hartwell of Indianapolis came out of the pack to win the men’s kilometer title. His time of 1:08.80 nipped defending national champion Bobby Livingston of Riverdale, Ga., by 8/100ths of a second.
The wins by Eickhoff and Hartwell mean automatic selection to the U.S. team that will ride at the World Championships in Lyon, France, next month.
