Ryan Strikes Out 14 in Six Innings, but Rangers Fall to Stieb, Blue Jays

ARLINGTON, Tex. — Nolan Ryan struck out 14 batters in six innings at Arlington, Tex., but in between the strikeouts, the Blue Jays had enough hits to beat Ryan and the Texas Rangers, 4-0.
The task was made easier because Dave Stieb (10-6) pitched well and the Blue Jays’ bullpen was superb. Stieb gave up just two hits in 5 2/3 innings, David Wells retired all four Rangers he faced and Duane Ward finished up for his 11th save.
The victory moved the Blue Jays to within 4 1/2 games of the slumping Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.
Shoddy defense by the Rangers contributed to the only run the Blue Jays needed in the first inning.
Ryan (11-6) improved his major league-leading strikeout total to 180. He needs 45 more to reach 5,000 in his career.
