P.M. BRIEFING : 2 Freedom Papers Sold in Midwest

OMAHA — Omaha World-Herald Co. announced today that it has completed a purchase agreement to acquire the Columbus Telegram in Nebraska and the Huron Daily Plainsman in South Dakota.
The daily newspapers will be acquired from Freedom Newspapers Inc., headquartered in Irvine, Calif., said Harold W. Andersen, Omaha World-Herald chairman and chief executive officer. No purchase price was disclosed.
“We consider this to be a sound long-term investment, particularly appropriate for us because it involves Midwestern newspaper publishing, something in which we have had long and successful experience,” Andersen said.
The Columbus Telegram has a daily circulation of nearly 11,000, and the Huron paper’s circulation is nearly 12,000.
Freedom Newspapers owns more than 25 newspapers, including the Orange County Register published in Santa Ana, Calif.
