Girls’ Tennis
Bonita Vista became the only unseeded 3-A team to advance to the semifinals as it knocked off No. 3 Mt. Carmel, 11-7.
Mt. Carmel managed to win just two of nine doubles matches and no singles matches.
Bonita Vista now goes up against No. 2 Torrey Pines today at 2:30 at Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines advanced on the strength of an 18-0 blowout of Helix.
The other semifinal will match No. 1 Poway against No. 3 Mira Mesa. Poway defeated Serra, 17-1, sweeping all doubles matches and eight of nine singles matches. Mira Mesa advanced by the slimmest of margins. After its match with San Dieguito ended in a 9-9 tie, it was declared the victor on the basis of overall points, 76-73.
In the 2-A, all four top seeds made it into today’s semifinals. No. 1 Bishop’s will face No. 4 USDHS, and No. 3 Our Lady of Peace will go up against No. 4 La Jolla.
Cross-Country
An appeal filed Tuesday by Mt. Carmel, Fallbrook and Poway High Schools to keep San Pasqual in the 1-A division for the upcoming cross-country championships has been upheld by the San Diego Section, according to Commissioner Kendall Webb.
A special committee met Wednesday morning and voted to keep San Pasqual’s boys teams from moving up to the 3-A division and the girls from jumping to the 2-A division for reasons based on enrollment.
