Tomkus Pac-10 Volleyball Player of Year

Daiva Tomkus, a UCLA senior from Chaminade High, was selected women’s volleyball player of the year in the Pacific 10 Conference for the second consecutive season in a vote of coaches.
Tomkus is a three-time all-conference choice at middle blocker. She has led top-ranked UCLA to a 27-2 overall record, 18-0 in the Pac-10, by averaging 3.54 kills and 1.48 blocks a game with a hitting percentage of .384.
Dave Trembley, former baseball coach at Antelope Valley College, was hired Monday as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ director of operations in Bradenton, Fla., the team’s spring training site. Trembley formerly managed the Harrisburg Senators, a double-A affiliate.
Cal Lutheran junior Matt Griffin was one of 24 men selected for the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics scholar-athlete cross-country honor squad.
Griffin, an English major who carries a 3.55 grade-point average, ran in the national cross-country meet in Kenosha, Wis., on Nov. 18. Griffin graduated from Cleveland High in Portland, Ore.
College of the Canyons has opening for two track and field assistant coaches.

The Alumni Basketball Holiday Classic will be held at Cleveland and Monroe high schools from Dec. 9-17. The double-elimination tournament is open to all alumni teams from Los Angeles-area high schools.
