NATION IN BRIEF : MICHIGAN : Parent Consent Bill on Abortions Gains

Unmarried girls under the age of 18 would have to get parental permission before obtaining an abortion in Michigan under a bill passed by the House, despite the governor’s promise to veto it. Before passing the measure by a 65-39 vote, lawmakers rejected nearly 50 amendments, including one that would have required boys to take some responsibility for preventing teen-age pregnancy by wearing condoms. The Senate, which has passed a similar measure, is expected to consider the legislation next week.
