WORLD : Thatcher’s Party Faces Election
LONDON — Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government today faced the prospect of an embarrassing special election following the suicide of Conservative member of Parliament John Heddle.
The 49-year-old legislator’s body was found in his car at a quarry south of London. A hose was connected to the car’s exhaust, and police said no one else was involved.
Heddle’s death will force Thatcher to hold a special election in his English Midlands constituency at a time when the government is trailing the opposition Labor Party by between 10% and 15%, according to opinion polls.
