ROMANIA: DEATH OF A DICTATOR : THE ROMANIA STORY

The Executions Deposed dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, Elena, have been executed after a secret trial in which they were convicted of “grave crimes,” including genocide, state television reported. The Fighting The army announced plans for a “final offensive” against pro-Ceausescu security forces who have conducted guerrilla warfare since the dictator was ousted. There was relatively little shooting in the capital, Bucharest. But battles were reported in the western city of Timisoara and the central city of Brasov. Bucharest’s airport was reopened to cargo planes, allowing medical supplies from the West to be airlifted in. U.S. Policy The White House established diplomatic relations with the new government, known as the National Salvation Front. However, it criticized the execution of the Ceausescus.
