World IN BRIEF : UNITED NATIONS : U.S., Soviets Ask New Salvador Effort

Secretary of State James A. Baker III and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze have asked U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar to participate personally in ending El Salvador’s 11-year civil war, supervising a cease-fire and monitoring elections expected to be held in March. A U.N. spokesman confirmed that Perez de Cuellar’s personal representative has just completed several days of secret talks in Mexico with the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, which is fighting the Salvadoran government.
