California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Rate of Car Thefts Was Slower in 1990

The California Highway Patrol estimates that about 298,000 vehicles were stolen in 1990--an increase of less than 1% from 1989. “Compared to the 16.1% average annual increase in stolen vehicles during the previous five-year period, I believe that this small percentage increase for 1990 is a very dramatic improvement,” Commissioner Maury Hannigan said. He credited greater public awareness and more aggressive law enforcement with slowing the growth rate of vehicle thefts, including greater numbers of CHP officers assigned to theft units, and more extensive training.
