WAR IN BRIEF : NATO : Air Patrol to Guard Mediterranean Sea

Military commanders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are assembling a force of 30 or more maritime patrol planes to monitor the Mediterranean and ensure the safety of sea lanes, officials said. Seven alliance ships already are sailing toward the Mediterranean to help guard against mines during the war. NATO sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey will send planes, while Britain, Spain, Greece and France intend to coordinate their current flights.
