AMMAN, Jordan — The government of Jordan has hanged a young air force pilot and a friend for spying for Israel, the first executions for high treason in nearly 30 years, an official Jordanian source said today.
Lt. Ali Abdul-Hafiz Abdul-Hafez, 24, and a childhood friend, Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed, a vegetable truck driver who relayed intelligence to Israel, were executed Feb. 3 at Swaka prison, 50 miles south of Amman, he said.
A military court convicted them of high treason.
The Jordanian source said the pilot had been a low-ranking officer with no access to sensitive information and the other was a civilian relative through marriage.
