Torgny Mogren, after winning a bronze and a silver medal at previous World Nordic Ski Championships, struck gold at Val Di Fiemme, Italy, beating fellow Swede Gunde Svan, the defending champion, in the 50-kilometer freestyle race. Mogren was timed in 2 hours 3 minutes 31.6 seconds.
Svan was 17.2 seconds behind.
