Richard Smith to Become President of Newsweek

Richard M. Smith has been appointed president of Newsweek, effective May 9. He will remain editor-in-chief, a position he has held since January, 1984.
Smith will be responsible for both news and business operations of the magazine, owned by the Washington Post Co.
Smith succeeds Alan Spoon, who on Thursday was named executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Post Co., effective May 9. Spoon had served as president of Newsweek since September, 1989.
Maynard Parker, editor of Newsweek since November, 1982, will direct day-to-day editorial operations.
