HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Freshman Pitches Simi Valley to Title, 1-0

Kathy Beasley’s two-out single in the eighth inning scored Taina Tande, lifting Simi Valley High to a 1-0 victory over Alemany in the championship game of the Simi Valley tournament Saturday.

Freshman right-hander Sara Griffin (3-0) threw a one-hitter, striking out eight. Alemany (7-1) loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Simi Valley left fielder Amy Hood snagged a line drive and threw a runner out at second to end the threat.

Beasley had two hits for Simi Valley (7-0). Krista Gomez, who was named the tournament most valuable player, had the only hit for Alemany.

In other softball games:

Newbury Park 2, Pacifica 1 (nine innings)--Sophie Sobol struck out 21 batters in pitching Newbury Park (6-1) to victory in a Canyon tournament game in Anaheim.

In an earlier tournament game, Newbury Park fell to Gahr, 1-0.

Thousand Oaks 5, El Dorado 0--Carrie Russell struck out five in a Tournament of Champions game at Peralta Park in Anaheim. In an earlier game, Thousand Oaks defeated St. Joseph, 3-2, when Julie Sugino singled home Julie Olin in the 10th inning.

BASEBALL

Notre Dame 7, San Pedro 3--Louie Tapia’s bases-loaded double helped visiting Notre Dame cap a five-run seventh in a semifinal game of the Westside tournament.

Sylmar 7, Ventura 2--A three-run double by James Encinas highlighted a seven-run second inning for the host Spartans (4-3) in a Westside tournament game. Steve Sanchez went five innings and gave up two unearned runs in recording his second win.

Saugus 5, Venice 0--Five Saugus pitchers combined on a four-hitter in a fourth-round Westside tournament game at Saugus. Josh Nolan hit a two-run home run in the third for Saugus (2-3).

Taft 11, Oxnard 6--Michael Krasner had two hits and two RBIs to lead the host Toreadors (4-3) to the Westside tournament win.

VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Arcadia, 17-15, 15-7--The Highlanders won the title of the 15-team Arcadia tournament behind Kevin Hambly’s 52 kills and 22 blocks in nine games. Hambly was named tournament MVP. Teammates Travis Ferguson, Karl Weschta and Canyon’s Troy Aldridge also were named to the all-tournament team.
