World IN BRIEF : BENIN : Marxist Leader Loses in Milestone Election

Prime Minister Nicephore Soglo soundly defeated discredited Marxist leader Mathieu Kerekou in the first presidential election in 21 years, according to official results. With nearly all votes counted, the Interior Ministry said that Soglo had won 68% to Kerekou’s 32%. A democracy movement swept Benin in 1989, and Kerekou was ousted as president a year ago. Soglo, a former World Bank official, headed a caretaker government.
