World IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury
- Share via
The 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, was formally installed as the legal and spiritual head of the Church of England, bringing to the position strong support for the ordination of women. Carey, 55, the son of a hospital porter, became leader of the world’s 70 million Anglicans in a ceremony unchanged since the 16th Century at St. Mary le Bow in London. He will be enthroned at Canterbury Cathedral on April 19. He succeeds Robert A. K. Runcie, who retired Jan. 31. Carey is described as an evangelical who wants to change the church’s image, which he acknowledges could be “dull and off-putting” to the young.
