The body of a man, possibly a drowning victim, was found early Saturday floating in a sand and gravel quarry near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego, officials said.

The victim, described only as a male in his mid-20s, was possibly one of two men who were swept away when they attempted to cross the rain-swollen Tijuana River on March 27, the county medical examiner’s office said.

The body of one of the two victims was found shortly after the two were washed away; the second man was listed as missing.

The area, near Dairy Mart Road, is a favorite crossing zone for northbound undocumented immigrants, who often negotiate the normally shallow Tijuana River on foot. In recent years, several border-jumpers have drowned during rain storms, when the waterway can become a swollen torrent.

An equipment operator found the body, floating in the quarry pond, at 7 a.m. Saturday, authorities said. There was no immediate indication of foul play, police said.
