COUNTYWIDE : Couple Struck by Rear-Ended Car

A Simi Valley couple was struck down in a crosswalk Sunday by a car that was hit from behind while stopping to let them pass, authorities said.

Betty Phillips, 63, was treated at Simi Valley Adventist Hospital for a broken shoulder, arm and ribs and released, police said. Her husband, Samuel, 67, was treated for a broken arm and released.

Simi Valley Police Lt. Neal Rein said the couple began crossing Sycamore Drive at Racine Street at 10:45 a.m. just as Steven Striglio, 29, of Simi Valley, was driving out of an auto parts store less than 100 yards away.

Shina Kacani, 20, of Simi Valley had stopped her car to let the Phillipses cross the street, Rein said. Striglio ran into the rear of Kacani’s car, which lurched forward and struck the couple.

Kacani, who is several months pregnant, was treated for neck injuries at Simi Valley Adventist Hospital and released, Rein said. Rein said Striglio will be cited for driving at an unsafe speed after police complete an investigation of the accident.

In an unrelated incident, a 35-year-old Ventura woman was injured in a hit-and-run accident Saturday night as she was crossing Harbor Boulevard, police said.
