A 13-year-old gang member, apparently angry that some men had laughed at him, allegedly fired a small-caliber derringer into the group Sunday, fatally wounding a 35-year-old neighbor, police said.
Justino Zavala died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was taken after the 3:15 p.m. shooting in the 1500 block of 226th Street in a strip of Los Angeles city territory near Torrance known as the Harbor Gateway, investigators said.
The 13-year-old, who was not identified because of his age, was arrested when he returned to the scene on a moped as detectives were investigating the shooting, police said. The gun was confiscated and the teen-ager was jailed in a juvenile facility, investigators said.
