A 91-year-old woman suffered serious burns Wednesday morning before she could be rescued from the flames and smoke that gutted her home at a senior citizen apartment complex in East San Diego, authorities said.
Josephine Zych was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where she was upgraded from critical to fair condition by Wednesday night with burns on her legs, face and left hand, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The fire, which is still under investigation, broke out about 9:15 a.m. in the kitchen of Zych’s apartment in the 4100 block of 39th Street and caused about $40,000 damage, said Larry Carlson, an investigator for the Metro Arson Strike Team.
